3. Heel Hook: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

Heel hooks are among the most damaging and revered submissions in grappling, often resulting in severe injuries. A submission that can result in devastating injuries, the Heel Hook has become Garry Tonon’s trademark. But the Heel Hook has been used in BJJ for a long time. The enteries have evolved. The most under-rated heel hooking leglocker is Eddie Cummings. He was rolling with John Danaher and the Danaher Death Squad before they came up, before Gordon Ryan made his massively successful career happen. His experimental and victorious use of this formidable weapon has drawn acclaim and attention to this unique submission. Below is a B-Team Jiu-Jitsu tutorial video for free on CountFilms TV Youtube Channel. It’s longer format but here are a couple of YouTube shorts that show the mechanics of the movement in under a minute for those who want a quick preview; Saddle Cross Ashi Heel Hook Tips featuring Craig Jones of B-Team Jiu-Jitsu, Heel Hook feat. Craig Jones, Heel Hook for MMA (UFC Level Heel Hook Details).

4. Ezekiel Choke: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

This deceptively simple submission has won over the grappling community for its ingenuity and challenge to pull off. 5. Knee Bar: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

Modern grappling is now unimaginable without leg locks. Techniques like the “dog bar”, (Knee Bar) variation, by BJJ world champion Bernardo Faria and the less gentle versions by Victor Anario have brought attention to this painful aspect of the art, the Leg Lock game! Now this list could go on and on with names such as Ryan Hall for giving us 50/50, and Danaher for giving us Ashi Garami, but the submission we want to focus on is the Knee Bar. It’s the precursors to the more advanced leg attacks. The beginning leg attacks in grappling were the more old school Brazilian leg attacks like the Knee bar, the Toe Hold, the Heel Hook, and the Ankle Lock. A contemporary and adventurous variation of the classic knee bar, the Dog Bar is an intriguing hyperextension technique. BJJ world champion Bernardo Faria has brought this move into the limelight, showcasing its effectiveness.

6. Calf Slicer: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

A move that compresses the opponent’s calves, the Calf Slicer induces agony and can rupture muscles. 7. The Cowboy Choke: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

Both GI and No-GI Jiu-Jitsu offer a wide array of techniques. While Gi Jiu-Jitsu is considered less dynamic than No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, its use of lapels adds to its technical diversity. Becoming a BJJ Black Belt and never learning the effectiveness of what the Gi offers in its variety of choke options in Jiu-Jitsu would be such a limiting factor for any student, and we encourage you to train the sport of Jiu-Jitsu in its entirety. The “Cowboy choke,” demonstrated by Daniel Sala, is a fine example of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s innovative techniques in the Gi. The Cowboy Choke is a remarkable finishing move, characterized by its complexity and technical diversity. Daniel Sala’s expert use of lapels to execute this choke from the front headlock position against Mateo Nunez showcases the brilliant exploitation of the uniform and offers a striking demonstration of the art.

8. Triangle Choke: Jiu-Jitsu Submission

Choke holds like the triangle choke have a rich history dating back to 1921, with many interpretations over the years. Antonio Carlos Jr’s flag triangle and Craig Jones’s ADCC flying triangle have kept this legacy alive. The Triangle Choke has been a mainstay in grappling competitions. Former UFC fighter Antonio Carlos Jr’s surprising Flag Triangle against Garry Tonon exemplified the technical prowess and agility that goes into this beloved submission. But by far the most famous Triangle Chokers around was single handedly Anderson Silva of the UFC. He was known for always being able to sink in a last minute Triangle.

These techniques are often prohibited in most competitions due to their dangerous nature but are still admired for their effectiveness. The Twister is a submission that, as previously stated, exerts monstrous pressure on the back and neck, the Twister’s unusual mechanics and potential damage make it a spectacle to watch and a possibly crippling event for both the opponent and aggressor.
