Quintet, the groundbreaking team grappling promotion created by MMA and grappling legend Kazushi Sakuraba, has announced its triumphant return. After a hiatus of over two years, grappling fans are eagerly anticipating the revival of one of the most innovative and electrifying promotions in the sport. On September 10th, 2023, Quintet is partnering with K-1 to stage an event called ReBOOT, featuring Quintet 4, and promises to bring back all the thrilling action fans have been missing. A Brief History of Quintet

Quintet’s debut in 2018 was met with resounding praise from both fans and fighters. With an original team-based grappling ruleset and the introduction of the ‘Ironman’ ruleset, it quickly became one of the sport’s most well-respected and innovative promotions.

Within the first year, Quintet staged four main events, with three featuring top-tier grapplers from around the globe, and a special Fight Night event focusing on Japanese competitors. Over the next three years, the promotion shifted its focus towards six more Fight Night events, including a special Quintet Ultra edition with MMA fighters.

Who is Quintet founder Kazushi Sakuraba?

Kazushi Sakuraba, the founder of the grappling team tournament Quintet is also a grappler and MMA fighter. He was known as a “Legend Among Legends” in MMA and professional wrestling. Sakuraba has left an indelible mark on the history of martial arts forever. His career began with training in Japanese professional wrestling, developing a powerful skill set that led to an extraordinary MMA career. Despite initial setbacks, Sakuraba’s tenacity earned him triumphs, including a victory in the UFC Japan heavyweight tournament in 1997. Joining PRIDE FC, he quickly became one of the top fighters. Perhaps most famous for his battles with continuously defeating the Gracie families clan member, earning him the nickname “Gracie Hunter,” Sakuraba’s confrontations with this martial arts dynasty have become legendary. Though his later years in MMA had mixed results, his legacy, marked by 26 wins out of 46 matches, continues to inspire both the MMA and professional wrestling worlds. So for Kazushi Sakuraba to start a grappling tournament, you can imagine how thrilled the current MMA and grappling communities have been.
